Having studied the rules, there can be no doubt while breaking them.

Derryll Brudzinski

My search for the mystery and origin of original ideas has finally resulted in some interesting observations. The vocabulary to describe what I am doing had to evolve simultaneously with the physical manifestation of my efforts. Tangible objects are born out of this journey, however, my interest is almost exclusively about the process.

Art is a statement or view abstracted out of practical things and ideas. A rock - is a bench - is a sculpture

My idea is to create and track art in the reverse, while forcing myself to endlessly make different versions of nonsensical objects until something practical emerges. The difficulty lies in staying on task, remaining focused on nothing until something appears without any kind of reference. It was clear that organic ideas could not emerge until consciously relieved of material origins and prejudices. Even gathering from a scrap yard would bias the results by the fact that I decided to go there in the first place. My dilemma was put to rest while mindlessly walking the beach. I would use only that which the tide washed up, regardless of size, texture, color ...validation or failure rested in whether or not practical things resulted, via abstraction in the reverse.

Does the creative process evolve in a fixed direction or are there ways to alter this activity to create functional objects?

About the Artist

“Derryll Brudzinski’s landscape paintings are clear, concise, and composed. In one sense, they respond to the deep, felt order of nature itself. They are architectonic in the same way that a gentle row of trees softens the hard rocks and ground surrounding it. In another sense, his composition is as personal and intuitive as a Pollock or DeKooning slash of paint.” Douglas Davis, New York Magazine

“The master” - Stuart Nudleman, Art Critic, Ogunquit Maine

The Art Department of Westfield State University, in Massachusetts, awarded Derryll Brudzinski an art scholarship in recognition of his scholastic achievements, creative endeavors and contributions.

He has been a college Art Instructor, and a University Guest Lecturer.
